"The Travaglini 2020 Gattinara Riserva (in the estate's distinctive frosted bottle with its iconic silhouette) shows a hint of candied cherry and crème de cassis that reflects the warmth of the growing season, yet it remains remarkably poised and elegant. Pressed violet, licorice, crushed flint and sweet spice emerge over a medium-dark appearance, with extra texture and richness building gently across the palate. One of the wine's greatest strengths is its restrained 13.5% alcohol, a hallmark shared by this impressive set of new releases despite increasingly warm vintages. The tannins are open-knit, making this approachable now. Production is 30,000 bottles." -ML, 7/23/26

"The 2020 Gattinara Riserva is laced with sweet dried cherry, tobacco, worn-in leather, herbs and incense. There's plenty of textural depth and the tannins to match, yet the Riserva comes across as a bit advanced. Both bottles I tasted struck me as less than perfect." -AG, Feb/2026
