Alicante Bouschet
Alicante Bouschet is a teinturier grape — meaning both its skin and its flesh are red (rare among wine grapes). Most red varieties have white pulp, but teinturier types yield deeply colored juice even without skin contact.
Created: 1855–1866, in the Languedoc region of southern France.
Breeder: Henri Bouschet
Crossing:
Petit Bouschet × Grenache (a.k.a. Garnacha)
Petit Bouschet itself was a cross of Aramon Noir × Teinturier du Cher, so Alicante is a multi-generation hybrid.
