"Labeled as “Weissburgunder trocken” in the domestic market, this displays fresh apple with a complementary vanillin overtone that reminds me slightly of site-typical Wehlener or Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling - except that the vanilla here is coming from the new 2,000-liter cask in which a portion of the wine was raised. The natural creaminess of Pinot Blanc has been nicely accentuated without sacrificing any primary juiciness, and the lingering finish invigorates with a nip of pepper cress and reveals stony, Mosel-typical underpinnings. Most of this cuvée came from Selbach’s original 2000 planting in the Himmelreich (which, back then, he envisioned for Sekt), a parcel that had a “one-star” bottling to itself last vintage. It was picked at the end of September, immediately following a “pre-harvest” thinning of Riesling. This wine might well confound my conservative prognostication of ageworthiness - that is, if anybody can resist drinking up every bit of what they have." -DS, Sep/2016
