Brewery's Notes
"Malted rice gives this beer a crisp, clean sharpness and a refreshingly dry finish, with subtle notes of toasted rice and honey. We add a touch of millet to boost the maltiness and give the beer a classic pilsner mouthfeel.
A restrained dose of Lórien (American-grown noble hops) rounds out the flavor, creating an easy-drinking beer that’s great on its own or when paired with food.
Formerly called Calrose Crisp, we renamed this beer to make the name easier to remember.
In designing this recipe, we wanted to brew a beer that really showcases the strengths of rice malt. Although people throughout Asia have been making rice beers for thousands of years, the idea of malting it in the European style is relatively new.
Thanks to the pioneering work of gluten-free American malters, we now have access to high-quality malted rice that is entirely gluten free and offers a broad spectrum of delicious flavors. It’s a very versatile ingredient, and what better way to put it in the spotlight than with a classic, refreshing lager.
Over the years and many batches brewed, we decided to add a small proportion of millet malt to this recipe, which helps to boost the perception of maltiness and gives this beer a more classic lager taste profile. In 2025 we also made the switch from Hallertau Tradition to Lórien, an American hop of German heritage that delivers all of that classic noble hop goodness in a Made-in-America cultivar."
