Product Overview
The 2016 Contrada Santo Spirito di Passopisciaro Animardente from Feudo Maccari is made from grapes grown on the rocky, volcanic soils of Mount Etna. Intense ruby red in color with garnet hints in the glass, the nose expresses floral, violet notes with aromas of cherry and blackberry jam, humus (soil), mushroom, balsamic, spices, and dark tobacco. On the palate, it's a warm and harmonious wine, structured as most Etna reds are, and fresh.
Varietal Composition: 100% Nerello Mascalese
Appellation: Etna Rosso DOC
Aging: 14 months in barrels and large tonneaux
92 Points - Wine Advocate
"The 2016 Etna Rosso Animardente shows a glossy and pristine approach with a mouthfeel that is very polished and silky at the edges. At its core, this Etna Rosso made with Nerello Mascalese offers wild berry and red currant with smoke, tar and campfire ash. The fruity intensity of this warm vintage comes together with fine and seamless transitions. This vintage shows a hair less complexity compared to past releases, but it compensates with an accessible and immediate personality for near and medium-term drinking. The wine is aged in large oak casks for 18 months. Some 9,000 bottles were produced." -ML, 12/28/18
90 Points - Vinous
"The 2016 Etna Rosso Animardente is dusty and coy, giving up only nuances of dried black cherries, roses and hints of cedar. It's a silky and pure expression with subtle notes of strawberry and inner florals. Fine tannins come forward through the finale, as this resonates on tart red berries and mineral tones. A short stay in the cellar may help the 2016 to further blossom, but I don’t expect this to be a long-lived vintage of Animardente." -EG, June/2021
