Winemaker's Notes
"Our Broken Stones cuvee is Syrah based, with a large portion of Petite Sirah and Grenache and a splash of Mataro. It is aged for 18-20 months in mainly new, French barriques. It is full-bodied, rich, and intense, but also reveals great purity, focus and complexity. The Broken Stones is a multi-vineyard blend, utilizing all the vineyards that we source from. Our wines are never racked off their lees and are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Click here to download notes on previous releases of Broken Stones.

"The 2022 Broken Stones is intense and tightly coiled at first, as dried black cherries mix with spiced orange peels and nuances of incense lifted by a whiff of fresh mint. It coasts across the palate with ease, energetic and spry, with mineral-inflected red berry fruit and a saturation of spice that emerges through the close. A cascade of violet inner florals and spice lingers as the 2022 tapers off long with silken tannins that resonate. Beautifully balanced, it does not show any of the negative drawbacks of the 2022 vintage." -EG, Jun/2025

"One of the more structured, inward 2022s from Smith and a wine that's going to benefit from short-term cellaring, … It takes some coaxing but slowly gives up wonderfully pure red and black fruits interwoven with classic peppery herbs, violets, savory spice, and floral nuances. Beautifully textured and medium to full-bodied, with just about perfect tannins, it needs to be hidden for 3-4 years but is one hell of an impressive wine." -JD, Aug/2024
95 Points - Wine Spectator
"Alluring in its play of contrasts, with bright and elegant details of orange blossoms, fresh herbs and guava paste meeting darker, richer flavors of blackberry, fresh fig and licorice. A cast iron note chimes in alongside a secondary wave of fruit on the finish around broad, ripe tannins. Syrah, Graciano, Zinfandel and Grenache. Drink now through 2040. 1,110 cases made." -AR, 10/31/25

"Intense aromas of extracted cherry, boysenberry, toasted wood and black pepper show on the nose of this blend of 66% Syrah, 13% Graciano, 11% Zinfandel and 10% Grenache. Deep, dark and lush flavors of black cherry are cut by a graphite minerality and steady acidity on the rich palate." -MK, 9/1/25
