Product Overview

The 2019 Viña Tarapacá Gran Reserva Carmenère from this Chilean winery that dates back to 1874 is sourced from their gorgeous, sustainably farmed estate vineyard. Displaying varietal and regional typicity in spades, this Carménère boasts great aromatic concentration with the upfront spicy and herbal notes such as black pepper and dill as well as ripe plums, black cherries, and blackberries, with background hints of vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, and coconut from the barrel-aging. On the medium-bodied palate, this is an elegant wine with very juicy and complex flavors of blackberries, chocolate, pepper, and bay leaf balanced by smooth, grippy tannins and a long finish.

Varietal Composition: 97% Carménère, 3% Syrah
Appellation: D.O. Valle del Maipo
Farming Practices: Sustainable
Aging: 80% aged 12 months in French and American oak (20% new), 20% kept in stainless steel
Winemaker: Sebastián Ruiz

89 Points - Vinous
"The 2019 Carménère Gran Reserva is mixed with 3% Syrah, both from Isla de Maipo, and spent 12 months in French and American barrels, 20% of them new. Inky violet in the glass. The nose presents black currant, blackberry and herbal notes alongside hints of white pepper. Opulent and warm with mild tannins, this is the quintessential Chilean Carménère style." -JH, May/2021

89 Points - Wine Spectator
"Crisp and savory, with well-defined juicy dark fruit and dried green herbal flavors. Shows mocha and dark chocolate on the finish, offering licorice accents. Drink now through 2023. 44,000 cases made, 396 cases imported." -KM, 2021

89 Points - Wine Enthusiast
"Aromas of herbal blackberry and dark plum come with notes of beef broth and gamy leather. This Carmenère from a hot and dry year feels full and edgy. Herbal plum and blackberry flavors lean toward spicy and slightly green, while catchy tannins make for a grabby finish. " -MS, 9/1/2021

89 Points - Wine Advocate
"The varietal and clean 2019 Gran Reserva Carmenere has notes of spices and herbs and a medium to full-bodied palate with fine tannins. An honest Carmenere. 450,000 bottles produced." -LG, 8/31/2021
