Product Overview

The 2013 Il Molino di Grace Il Margone Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is made from select grapes picked from dedicated Riserva vineyards with an average age of 20 to 30 years. The vineyard's extra-high elevation – up to 1,300 feet above sea level – allows the grapes an extra week of hang time, resulting in greater concentration. The finished wine is deep crimson in color and the rich, spicy bouquet is amazingly intense. The palate shows great depth and features a velvety texture followed by a long, lingering finish. As every Gran Selezione should be, Il Margone is a total showstopper, demonstrating the potential of Chianti. This wine pairs well with beef fillet, game birds, and rack of lamb.

Varietal Composition: 100% Sangiovese
Appellation: Chianti Classico DOCG
Aging: 16 months in French barriques and tonneaux, followed by 3 years in bottle prior to release
Farming Practices: Organic, no irrigation

92 Points - Wine Spectator
"The aromatics are terrific in this muscular red, with flavors of toast, spice and pipe tobacco surrounding macerated cherry. Needs time to resolve the oak. Best from 2019 through 2032. 2,000 cases made." -BS, 10/31/17

91 Points - Wine Advocate
"Gran Selezione wines are distinguished by their added extract and the richer textural impact they make in the mouth, among other qualities. Tasting the 2013 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Il Margone next to Il Molino di Grace's 2015 Chianti Classico gives you a perfect view onto the stylistic distances between the two wines. This expression is redolent of dark fruit, baking spice and cinnamon stick. The mouthfeel here is brighter and more buoyant than expected, thanks to that crisp acidity (developed in this cooler vintage) tucked neatly at the back." -ML, 10/31/17

91 Points - Vinous
"Il Molino di Grace's 2013 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Il Margone is done in a rich, unctuous style. Super-ripe black cherry, chocolate, plum, licorice, spice, tobacco and menthol are all amped up. Readers should expect a potent, opulent Chianti Classico. I am not sure the Margone needs this much oak. Even so, all the elements are very nicely balanced." -AG, Jan/2018

90 Points - Wine Enthusiast
"Blue flower, baked plum and pipe tobacco aromas slowly take shape. The palate offers dried cherry, prune, star anise and crushed sage while firm acidity and assertive, close-grained tannins provide the austere backbone. Give this a few more years for the tannins to unwind. Drink 2019–2025." -KO, 3/1/18
