Product Overview

The 2017 Avennia Gravura is "left bank" inspired Bordeaux-style blend that emphasizes a harmony of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot commonly found in Graves wines. Gravura starts with a lively bouquet of red currants, Damson plum, Amarena cherries, violets, pencil shavings, and rich milk chocolate notes. Seamless and balanced on the palate, with a freshness indicative of the vintage, this wine finishes with rich red and black fruits, anise, desert sage, and rich mocha powder. While tasting delicious out of the gate, short term cellaring will bring together the components over the next 8-12 years.

Varietal Composition: 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc
Appellation: Columbia Valley AVA
Aging: 20 months, French oak, 60% new
Production: 350 cases
Winemaker: Chris Peterson

93 Points, "Cellar Selection" - Wine Enthusiast
"Cabernet Sauvignon (47%) and Merlot (42%) make up the heart of this wine, with Cabernet Franc providing its soul. The aromas impress, with notes of bay leaf, thyme, graphite, dark coffee, raspberry and spice. The palate is classically styled and exquisitely balanced, bringing a sense of sophistication and detail, with plentiful cherry and herb accents. There's lovely sense of complexity. Firm, slightly green tannins back it all up. Just a baby now, it wants some time in the bottle to grow up. Best from 2024 to 2032." -SS, 4/1/20

93+ Points - Vinous
"Bright, dark, saturated red with ruby tones. Redcurrant, milk chocolate, graphite and fresh herbs on the nose. Densely packed, juicy and light on its feet, with dominant flavors of redcurrant and graphite perked up by a note of peppermint. A distinctly elegant, refined style with a creamy old-vines character (the Cabernet Franc was planted in 1997 and most of the rest of the fruit is from older vines) and lovely inner-mouth violet lift. Finishes with serious dusty tannins, hints of licorice and violet and subtle rising length. The 2016 version of this wine has a darker fruit character while this one is more Bordeaux-like in its graphite minerality (the wine is named after Graves) and classic dryness. This wine is also a bit more backward at this early stage than the 2016 was last year. I would not be at all surprised if it merited an even higher score five or six years down the road. (14.6% alcohol)" -ST, Dec/2019

90+ Points - Wine Advocate
"Dark ruby with a purple edge, the 2017 Gravura is open-knit and juicy with a straightforward, expressive nose that showcases French oak upfront with vanilla tones, before revealing a delicious dark-fruited core of plum essence with cinnamon spice. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is ripe, juicy and expressive, with elements of roasted corn, juicy black cherry and cinnamon spice. The wine lingers with a tannic edge and elevated alcohol expression. It’s ready to begin drinking now and will drink nicely for the next 7 to 8 years." -AM, 10/22/20
